Tower of God Anime Review: Beginning of a new era in anime

The moment Tower of god was announced it immediately caught everyone’s attention as Tower of God is one of the first webtoons that gained large popularity.

Webtoons began in Korea as a digital platform for Korean ‘manhwa’ which has considerable success all over the world. Now that these webtoons are starting to get animated, manhwa fans and anime fans all over the world are very excited to see it in its new form.

Tower of God is the first anime released by Crunchyroll in partnership with Webtoon. Tower of God is a great choice for shonen anime fans who love a battle system based fantasy world which also has many unexpected twists. It has lots of action with each character having a different ability, interesting characters, and exciting battles.

Introduction-

Tower of God is Crunchyroll’s latest original anime based on a South Korean Webcomic. It is the first anime that was created after Crunchyroll and WEBTOON partnership that aims to produce anime based on WEBTOON’s digital comics.

Tower of God anime takes place in a world based on a battle system called the Tower, which is divided into three parts: the inner tower, outer tower, and the middle arena. Instead of big character introductions and detailed world-building Tower of God focuses on the journey of the main character Bam in his quest to find his best friend. In this process, the anime slowly gives hints about the secrets of the tower and about the past of the characters episode by episode. It is more of an episodic type adventure series where the information is dropped a little at a time not making it overwhelming for the viewer.

Overview-

Tower of God starts with the protagonist Bam trying to stop his best and only friend Rachel from leaving him alone. But Rachel had made her decision to go on the Tower of God to fulfill her dream of seeing the stars.

Bam is a young boy with no memory of him or his past found by Rachel who taught him everything about the world. As Rachel was the only person that Bam cared about, he chases her to the tower to reunite with her.

There are two types of individuals who climb the Tower. Ones that are chosen by Tower Guardian Headon to climb and advance are called ‘regulars’. Regulars are given the opportunity to climb the tower, and the individual who reaches the top can get any of their wishes fulfilled. Rachel and Bam are called ‘irregulars’ who entered the tower without the permission of Headon.

In the Tower to climb every floor both the regulars and irregulars have to fight battles and complete tasks to go to the next floor to reach the top. But the only quest of Bam is to find Rachel, not caring about reaching the top. In the second task, he ends up teaming with Rak and Khun.

Rak is an alligator-like looking warrior that loves to fight strong warriors. He is not the sharpest tool in the shed and he addresses every character as a turtle. Khun on the other hand is bright as a button and thinks very carefully before making a decision. But has trust issues as his family was betrayed in the past.

There are princesses of Jahad also amongst the regulars climbing the tower. The princesses are a group of elite females chosen to serve Jahad, which are considered as the ultimate species. There are many other individuals among the regulars having different abilities and special weapons which make the battles more interesting.

There are many dark secrets that lurk in the tower that the contestants are unaware of. These secrets link with the past of the characters that are slowly revealed in the series. Bam in his quest to find Rachel and fighting battles makes many friends along the way, which are his only friends after Rachel.

Why should you watch Tower of God-

Extraordinary battles

Tower of God has intense and cleverly fought battles that keep the viewer engaged. There are users of Shinsu, which is similar to mana in most of the anime like Bam. There are also those who wield special weapons like the 13 Month series that has tremendous power in them like the princesses of Jahad, and finally those who just use brute strength like Rak.

The battles apart from having super-powered individuals always use strategies to turn the tables at the last second to defeat stronger individuals. The fighting scenes have a good animation making it a better viewing experience.

Game like shonen

Every one levels an anime in which every level there is a challenge that the protagonist has to solve giving it a game-like experience. Tower of God has a video game-like battle setup as it has worked with friends and intense battles on each floor.

It is similar to a few specific arcs in anime like Hunter X Hunter where Killua and Gon climb the trick tower and learn new abilities along the way and defeat the floor masters. And like One Piece where Luffy had to go through the various levels of Impel down to reunite with his brother Ace.

New animation and opening

Tower of God animation style has a feeling of hand-drawn crayon drawings which sets it apart from the other anime. The animation of the battle scenes are well animated and keep its reputation up to the level of the tower of god webcomic.

The fans are loving the opening song of Tower of God (Top) and the ending song (Slump). Both the songs are sung by a band called Stray Kids which consists of 8 members. The fans are showing enormous love to the band for making the great opening and ending songs.

Supporting Web Comics

Just like manga is a huge industry in Japan, manhwa also includes hundreds of comics that have the potential to be as big as the manga industry. Many people are trying to make comics outside Japan, and they rarely get a chance to see their comic turned into an animation series. Now that webcomics are getting a chance to get animated, we must show our support by watching these anime. We can also read the comics on Webtoons to support the creators.

No. of episodes and seasons in Tower of God-

As of now only one season of Tower of God has been released.

Season 1 has 13 episodes in total.

The second season Dr.Stone wars is postponed to released on January 2021 because of the global pandemic.

Season 2 of Tower God is expected to have a premiere in April 2021.

Pros and Cons of Tower of God-

Pros-

Tower of God has unique animation and the anime opening and ending are the cherries on top. Tower of God has some unique characters that anyone can quickly get attached to.  Apart from all the reasons why you should watch it, the anime series contains only 12 episodes with no filler episodes.

Cons-

The protagonist of the tower of god is not like the typical shonen main protagonists. Instead of being energetic, loud, having leader qualities, and big dreams Bam is a blank main character that doesn’t know much about the world and has the only goal, which is to find Rachel. People who love sunny shonen protagonists might not like Bam.

The anime doesn’t give enough information about the world leaving the viewer confused about a few things in the starting four to five episodes. Every character has a different ability but there is no explanation given in the anime yet to describe these powers.
