Haikyuu Anime Review: The best sports anime ever

If you are a sports anime fan and you haven’t heard of Haikyuu then you need to think carefully about your title as an anime fan. And if you are just a shonen anime watcher who thinks that sports anime are boring then this anime will absolutely change your thoughts about them.

Haikyuu is a must-watch anime for all the anime fans even if you have just started your journey in the anime world. Haikyuu is probably the best sports anime in the anime world which has a very large fandom all over the world. Haikyuu is completely filled with thrilling matches and many moments that will give you Goosebumps. An absolutely great Anime to put in your “Watch first list”.

Sports anime is a genre that never disappoints you and is always a fun new experience to watch. It has the magical ability to make you fall in love with a sport that you have never played in your whole life. It also makes to get up and play the sport you are watching so badly that you would play the sport until you are drenched in sweat.

Every time there is a feeling inside me that I am running out of good anime to watch or anime doesn’t excite me anymore, all I do is watch a sports anime. For someone who hates watching sports on TV, anime has given a completely new medium for many people to enjoy watching sports at its best.

Luckily for me, I have played a lot of volleyball in my high school days but after watching Haikyuu all I have been doing is just hitting the ball so that I can make the ball reach the opponent’s court. Haikyuu is a sports anime that teaches you in great depth and in a fun way about the rules and techniques of playing volleyball.

I can promise you that you will have a very high eagerness to play volleyball the moment you finish watching its first episode even if you’ve never played it in your whole life. It feels like every episode of Haikyuu passes within seconds and within a few minutes you find out that you have completed the whole season. I can promise you that this anime will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout every minute of the series and you won’t be able to take your eyes away from the screen even for a minute.

Hinata Shoyo is a boy who is completely in love with volleyball and his dream is to become like his idol, the little giant who was a volleyball player that played for Karasuno High School at nationals. Hinata is only 162 cm tall and volleyball is a game that encourages tall people; he is at a big disadvantage. But like all the anime protagonists Hinata doesn’t look at the negative points and work hard to overcome the problems to fulfill his dreams.

When you lack in one thing you develop other skills in other aspects. Similarly, our main character Hinata compensates for his small height with his very quick movements on the court, powerful high jumps, and never-ending stamina.

Well, his problem didn’t stop there, the middle school he went to didn’t have a volleyball team so he spent all three years of his middle school practicing on his own. But luckily in his third year, he was able to participate in the tournament thanks to his friends who agreed to become his temporary team.

He loses his first match in the tournament against Tobio Kageyama, the “King of the Court” who is a very talented setter who is famous for his highly precise setting. In High School fate brings both of them to the same High School at Karasuno.

Like any sports anime, Haikyuu also includes the thirds years those never made to the nationals, but are waiting for the opportunity to knock on their door. And this opportunity is the unique and talented first-year students that are ready to do anything to make it big.

They again start convincing the third year to get back in the team and give one last shot. Finally the journey of Karasuno High School Volleyball team to become the best in Japan starts.

Normally you can guess that the main team will win in a sports anime overcoming all the difficulties in their way. But in Haikyuu you can never guess what’s going to happen next and it is never assured that the team will win which makes it more realistic. Every move in the match is unpredictable which makes watching it all the more exciting.

Why you should watch Haikyuu?

Character development

Normally in a sports anime, they show you the unique ability of the main character, and the whole series is based on that ability and just sheer will. But in Haikyuu the characters know that just using their gift is not enough to win so they develop new strategies and new skills to win the match.

Hinata who is a spiker also learns to block and receive to support the team in all circumstances. The characters that seemed just ordinary at the start of the series develop skills by training that play important roles during the tournament. The writer has focused on each character and has sometimes given the side characters more important than the main character in some matches showing great character development. In the end, there is no protagonist character instead everyone in the team is a protagonist.

Tense moments

The best thing I love about Haikyuu and the sports Volleyball is that it has a feeling of tense that any second the ball could touch the ground. Thus there’s always a possibility for the match to change course at any second of the match.

Haikyuu has beautifully used this feeling to a great extent which sets it apart from all other sports anime. You can sometimes notice yourself sweating and holding your breath as the ball is in air and it could fall down at any moment. You get so completely engrossed in the match; it almost feels like we are on the court watching the match right in front of our eyes. The match progresses so fast and slow at the same time. It sometimes becomes difficult to keep up with the speed of the ball and sometimes it feels like time is moving slowly.

Great anime openings and Ost’s

Haikyuu has some of the most awesome and inspiring openings I have ever listened too in anime. Almost all the openings in Haikyuu have a heavy voice with intense background music that is worth listening to before every episode. I love listening to Haikyuu openings on my phone on repeat and I am sure you will love them too. Even though you can’t understand the lyrics you can feel the excitement and feel super excited and energetic by hearing the openings.

The anime OST’s are a cherry on top of the exciting moments during any match. Many anime watchers don’t realize that anime ost’s play a very important in any scene. Anime OST’s amplify the feeling to a great extent making every feeling of tense, thrill, or joy better.

Unique characters

Each and every character in Haikyuu is unique and one can easily start to like them after watching a few episodes. A very big reason for Haikyuu’s large popularity across the world is because of the outstanding personalities of the characters.

Hinata Shoyo is the typical short, energetic character who is totally in love with playing volleyball and with the feeling of the ball hitting his hand before a spike. He trains on his own to improve and is quick on the court ready to go wherever the ball goes.

Tobio Kageyama is the prodigy setter who is also known as “King of the Court”. He is known for his super précised setting which makes it very easy for the spiker to score. But with too much power comes pride which was a reason for his fight in middle school. He loves volleyball and is ready to do anything to win.

Kei Tsukishima is the tall middle blocker with a slim build. He is the type who doesn’t get that much-hyped or low but has a dedication to the game. He gets annoyed usually and doesn’t go the extra mile like Hinata and Kageyama.

The Captain and Wing-spiker of the Karasuno High school volleyball team Daichi-San is a very reliable third-year student. Even though he is strict and scary most of the time and gives importance to discipline, he deeply cares for his teammates and looks after them. Whenever the team is feeling low he motivates the whole team with his heartwarming words. His great leadership and caring for his team members makes him a very good captain.

The Ace and Wing-spiker of Karasuno Asahi-San might look big and intimidating at first but he is the quietest and kindest person on the team. He always tries his best to keep the pride of his title as the ace of the team and not to disappoint other team members.

The Libero of Karasuno Yu Nishinoya is a second-year student and is called as “Guardian Deity of Karasuno” for his remarkable receives. He saves the team during the worst times and helps his team members get back up. Nishinoya is a very reliable libero on whom they can always depend on to get the ball up in the air after the opponent’s spikes. He is also very popular among the fans for famous receive which he has name “ROLLING THUNDER!!!!”

The other Wing-spiker of Karasuno Tanaka-san is that guy who is always up for a fight. The one with always “ORA ORA ORA” coming out of their mouth. (Maybe a JOJO reference).

The manager of the Karasuno High School Volleyball team Shimizu-San is a beautiful girl who always cheers up the team with her smile, especially Tanaka and Nishinoya.

Top tier animation

The animation in Haikyuu is very clean which makes it a very good watching experience. What I mean by clean is that even though the scene is focused on the ball and the players, the animation of the court, the referee, and the audience is also great. Haikyuu’s art style is also unique, the faces are a little pointed and have triangular chin which makes the expressions of the players very sharp looking.

Also, the animation of the eyes in Haikyuu is extraordinary. The reflection of the volleyball in the eyes and the sharp looks is enough to give you Goosebumps. Every line that is drawn plays a unique role in the scene and increases its impact. Even a ball is highly animated when it is getting pressed against the hand during a smash. You can clearly see the ripples on the surface of the ball that looks totally real. The animation of the air when the ball goes in high speed, the animation of the sweat, and the impact of the ball on the hand during a receive or spike really adds up to it.

Haikyuu’s animation is not the greatest but I think it is perfect for the anime and is in a class of its own. I can’t imagine any other animation style than the one in its place. Some of the scenes in the anime are so greatly animated like the instant spikes and wonderful receives. They really take matches and the anime to a whole new level.

Technical and realistic

Even though sports are supposed to be realistic, many great sports anime like Kuruko no Basket has powers like zone which are a little unrealistic. But not Haikyuu, Haikyuu is one of the most realistic and technical anime i have seen in my journey as an otaku.

Haikyuu has greatly explained every term and technique in Haikyuu in the most fun way which is a major reason why everyone has a feeling of playing volleyball after watching Haikyuu. Every volleyball formation, techniques about receiving, serving, setting, and spiking is clearly explained in Haikyuu. Thus, many people who haven’t played volleyball even for once in their life get so much knowledge about volleyball after watching Haikyuu.

Pros and Cons of Haikyuu-

Ok!!, So where should I start. I think I have already said everything I can about Haikyuu. Haikyuu has everything a great anime needs – top tier animation, great voice actors, superb plot, and extraordinary matches.

Apart from all the reasons why you should watch it, each season in the anime series contains no more than 25 episodes with no filler episodes. So you don’t need a strong commitment to watch this anime like One Piece (if you haven’t seen it click on One Piece). I can guarantee you the episodes will feel like just a few moments coz you won’t have even a second to check how much time has passed.

After dwelling for a few minutes with my fingers on the keyboard I realized that there are no cons of the anime Haikyuu. An anime which ranks #4 on the myanimelist.net, voted as the best sports anime of the decade by Crunchyroll Awards and its manga is one of the most popular manga all over the world I don’t think there is any sense in wasting time on thinking about the cons of this great anime.

About the writer of Haikyuu-

Haikyuu is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The chapters are being serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2012 and Haikyuu has now become one of the most popular manga to date.

He/she is also known for the series Yotsuya Sensei no Kaidan which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2010. 25 years old Haruichi Furudate began his career with his/her one-shot Ousama Kid (King Kid) which won an honorable mention for the 14th Jump Treasure Newcomer Manga Prize.

The creator of Kuruko no Basket helped the creator of Haikyuu!! in drawing sweat and volleyball attacking positions. In exchange for this favor the Haruichi Furudate treated him ramen for a whole month.

Furudate played volleyball as the middle blocker in Junior high school and his/her favorite volleyball players are One Piece and Tekkonkinkreet.

After running for eight years straight in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine Haruichi Furudate officially brought Haikyuu!! to an end. The creator left a thank you note for the fans that have been supporting the series for nearly a decade.  In the final note, the creator bids goodbye to the magazine “I was super super lucky to get serialized in a magazine full of monsters! Final Thoughts-

In the end, I just want to say that there are some creations that one must experience at least once in their life. Haikyuu is a really great anime that fills your body with excitement and every second of the episode is full of thrill. I think everyone should watch this marvelous series you won’t regret it.

Every season goes by in a flash, so it gets disappointing sometimes to wait so long for the next season. But it’s good news for you because if you haven’t watched it yet, you have 3 full seasons to watch and the fourth season is about to get completed.
